Purpose

Family Matters ("FM") is a non-profit ministry whose goal is to see families transformed by God into instruments of restoration and reformation by equipping families for every age and stage of life. FM views families as the foundation of a successful society. Today, perhaps more than ever before, the family is being fragmented and undermined by many counter-forces such as busyness, relentless change, a lack of clear moral values, an attitude of indifference, and children being forced to grow up too fast. When families are unhealthy, our communities suffer many of the consequences in areas relating to economic productivity, education, law enforcement, health care needs, abuse, and violence.

Family Matters offers hope to today's family by...

  • Educating family members about the strategic role they play in their homes and communities.
  • Equipping family members with successful relational skills and resources to make better family choices.
  • Encouraging family members to keep their promises and fulfill their commitments to one another.

In addition to offering hope, the FM ministry philosophy embraces a grace-based approach to relationships, provides a solid grasp of the "big picture", promotes a character-driven strategy for parenting, and shows family members how to leave a legacy that never dies.

Family Matters has created relevant, practical and well-researched tools to equip families...

  • Books: Grace Based Parenting, Grace Filled Marriage, Connecting Church and Home, The High cost of High Control and Extreme Grandparenting. Little House on the Freeway, Raising Kids Who Turn Out Right, Homegrown Heroes, Basic Training for a Few Good Men.
  • Video Series: the Grace Based Parenting Video Series and Extreme Grandparenting. The Hurried Family Video Series and Basic Training for a Few Good Men (a seven-part study)
  • Conferences: The Grace Based Parenting Conference, The Grace Filled Marriage Conference, and the Extreme Grandparenting Conference.

Mission statement

Family Matters, Inc. uses the following to express its mission:

"The mission of Family Matters is to build strong families by educating, equipping and encouraging them for every age and stage of life."

Statement of faith

Family Matters gives the following as its statement of faith:

  1. We believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
  2. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  3. We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man. He came to earth being supernaturally conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  4. We believe that man was created in the image of God, that man sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God; and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature.
  5. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative, substitutionary, and complete sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood.
  6. We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into Heaven, and in His present life there for us, as High Priest and Advocate.
  7. We believe in the second imminent visible and personal coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to establish His worldwide kingdom on earth.
  8. We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God eternally.
  9. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust.
  10. We believe in the great commission which our Lord has given to His Church to evangelize the world and to disciple believers.

Response from ministry

Posted on 3/30/04, the following explanation from the ministry is in regards to their 2003 audited financial statement:

"I would like to offer one explanation for the fundraising expenses of $92,017.00 that appear on page 3 of our audit. In years past, our auditors did not identify any fundraising expenses as a separate item. They were included in other expenses, such as printing, postage, etc. ECFA brought to our attention in our last Annual Review that we needed to identify those expenses separately. We have done so this year. However, because of how our fiscal year falls, our single annual fundraising event happened twice in the same fiscal year (October 2002 and September 2003). Normally, this event costs about $65,000 annually, with part of this amount paid in deposits before the event, part during the event and the remainder about 30 days after it is over. I offer this explanation so that you will take into consideration that (1) we have not just started to spend money on fundraising and (2) we do not spend that large of amount in a year's time."
