Summary

Imagine you have lost your job. Your spouse has left you. Your family and friends have disowned you... all because you have contracted a disease for which there is no known cure. In East Africa, stigma cuts people off from society and prevents them from receiving life-saving care. There are currently 19.4 million people living with HIV in Sub Saharan Africa. This is the most vulnerable population in the modern world.

HIV doesn't have to be a death sentence. CARE for AIDS exists to empower people to live a life beyond AIDS. We do this through facilitating transformation physically, emotionally, socially, economically, and spiritually for our clients over the course of a nine-month program.

Purpose

CARE for AIDS operates centers in multiple communities throughout East Africa, and each center is located within a local church, which is local, cost effective, and discreet for our clients. Each center has two local Kenyan or Tanzanian counselors who guide 80 HIV+ clients through a nine-month process. Throughout the nine months we work to empower clients in five main areas: spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and economically.

Mission statement

CARE for AIDS exists to mobilize the church in caring, both physically and spiritually, for families affected by HIV/AIDS in East Africa.

History

In the summer of 2007, Justin Miller a student from the U.S., went on a mission trip to Kenya. There, he was confronted by the harsh realities of life for HIV-positive men and women. By God's divine appointment, Justin was hosted by Cornel Onyango and Duncan Kimani, two men who share a similar passion and calling for marginalized people living with HIV/AIDS. Together, Justin, Cornel and Duncan understood that they had a vision to create a team of caregivers and providers for Kenya's HIV-positive population. They believed that the church could be more than a house of worship but also a haven for medical care, life counseling, and HIV support. They understood that HIV does not have to be the end of life, but can be a beautiful opportunity for physical and spiritual restoration.
