Purpose

Bethany is equipping and sending intercultural disciple-makers to bring Kingdom transformation in the nations.

We focus on evangelism, church planting, leadership development, and missions training. We disciple students, send missionaries, and partner with national workers around the world so all will know the name of Jesus Christ-this is the Great Commission.

Mission statement

Our mission is to take the Church to where it is not by recruiting, equipping, and fielding followers of Jesus who are transformed by the Cross, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and effectively prepared with intercultural educational experience, who lead by serving with global partners to transform people and communities, delighting God's heart, and extending His Kingdom!

Statement of faith

We have been enlightened, enriched, and edified by many streams of Christian truth, and do not seek to distinguish or divide ourselves from other members of the Body of Christ. This statement, however, describes the fundamental truths in which we believe and by which we seek to live.

We Believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God, without error in the original manuscripts.

We Believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We Believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, and His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His personal return in power and glory.

We Believe that man was created in the image of God, that he was tempted by Satan and fell, and that all following Adam have sinned and are sinful; that repentance toward God, faith in Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are necessary for salvation.

We Believe that followers of Jesus Christ are called to sanctification through identification with Jesus Christ in His death and resurrection.

We Believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling, empowering, and gifts the Christian is enabled to live a life of godliness and effective service.

We Believe in the bodily resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the saved to the resurrection of life and the lost to the resurrection of damnation.

We Believe that all followers of Jesus are to be committed to the fulfilling of the Great Commission as found in Mt. 28:18-20 and are to be involved in making it possible for the Gospel to be preached to all the peoples of the world.

History

Bethany Fellowship was founded by five families in 1945. Ted Hegre, who served as their pastor, shared with this small fellowship the vision of sending and supporting 100 missionaries. After much prayer, these five families sensed God leading them to sell their homes and pool their resources to acquire a common residence, a large, 30-room home in Minneapolis called "Bethany House." The purpose of this community life was to reduce unnecessary work and expense so more time and money would be available for working together to fulfill the vision God gave them-living the sanctified Christian life and completing the unfulfilled task of world missions.

The name "Bethany" was chosen because it was a place Jesus would retreat with his disciples for rest, prayer and reflection. As Bethany Fellowship expanded, they outgrew "Bethany House" where they all lived. In April 1946, they purchased a 62.5 acre farm in Bloomington, Minnesota, moving there in June 1948.

Bethany Global University began with 10 students in October 1948. In the early years, graduates of what was then called "Bethany Fellowship Missionary Training Center" served with various mission sending agencies.

Bethany's primary source of funding through the years, along with school fees, mission support partners, and people giving as moved by God, has been through business ventures that produced wood toys, lefse and pancake griddles, camping trailers, and book publishing and printing. These ventures funded the community, the college of missions, and supported missionaries. Bethany Press International, founded in 1997 as a separate ministry to print books for Christian authors and publishers, originally printed books for Bethany House Publishers (begun in 1956 and sold in 2003 to Baker Book House). Bethany Press continues to be a major source of funding for the training and sending of Bethany missionaries.

We have a growing excitement about Bethany's place in God's plan to train and send a new generation of servant leaders for missions in the 21st Century. We live in perhaps the most exciting and challenging generation in all of history. We are committed to seeing thousands more young men and women equipped to "GO!" as God's agents of transformation into all nations, all spheres of influence, and to all generations.
