Summary
Baptist Medical & Dental Mission International (BMDMI) exists under the Lordship of Jesus Christ to evangelize the lost, disciple the saved, and minister to the needs of the poor. Since its inception in 1974, BMDMI has worked to strengthen and expand its ministry of evangelism and Christian service in some of the poorest nations in the world - Honduras, Nicaragua, Nepal and Guatemala. Through the array of ministries, including short-term medical/dental and evangelism teams, children's homes, schools, Bible institutes, and other gospel-centered programs, BMDMI allows volunteers to serve alongside full-time missionaries for the purpose of reaching people with the love and salvation of Jesus Christ.
BMDMI ministries and missionaries are fully supported by the contributions of interested individuals and churches, and are not under the auspices of any other organization or institution.
BMDMI is a nonprofit organization and contributions to it are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. In addition, it is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA)

Purpose
Baptist Medical & Dental Mission International (BMDMI) has been serving the physical and spiritual needs of the poor around the world since 1974. The flagship ministry of BMDMI is short-term mission teams, which sends more than 100 medical/dental teams across the world each year to serve in Honduras, Nicaragua, Nepal, and Guatemala. The services these teams provide are often the only medical and dental attention that some people receive; and each opportunity is met with sharing the Gospel message of love and hope that is found in Jesus Christ. The purpose of these short-term mission teams is to come alongside our long-term ministry goals and projects in each of the countries in which BMDMI serves. Each ministry is led and administered by a BMDMI full-time missionary, allowing for short-term missions to have long-term impacts in the communities around the world.
Discipling new believers is a core value of BMDMI. Throughout its 40+ year history, BMDMI has planted more than 150 indigenous churches, and pastors and lay leaders are trained at BMDMI Bible Institutes. Additionally, BMDMI meets other needs through a variety of ministries such as children's homes for abused, abandoned, and neglected children; a surgical hospital; vocational training for adults; Christian schools for children and youth; construction ministries; and other benevolent services.
Mission statement
BMDMI communicates its mission as the following:
Baptist Medical & Dental Mission International exists under the Lordship of Jesus Christ to evangelize the lost, disciple the saved, and minister to the needs of the poor.
Statement of faith
BMDMI communicates its Doctrinal Statement as the following:
The Inspiration of the Bible
We believe the Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God.
(Jer. 30:2, II Timothy 3:16, II Peter 1:20,21)
The Person of God
We believe God is supreme in His person, eternal in His being, absolute in His attributes, glorious in His perfection. We believe in the Trinity.
(Gen. 1:1, Isa. 6:1, Deut. 6:4, Matt. 6:9)
The Person of Jesus Christ
We believe in the virgin birth of Christ, His deity and sinless life, His vicarious death, His bodily resurrection, and in His personal pre-millennial return.
(Matt. 1:18,20, II Cor. 5:21, I Cor. 15:3-4)
The Person of the Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead. We believe that he executes the plan of God for our conviction and salvation. From the time of conversion, the Holy Spirit resides in the body of the believer and empowers him/her for God's service.
(Col. 2:9, Matt. 10:16, John 14:16)
The Fall of Man
We believe that man was created in the image of God and by choice man fell into sin and death. Hence, every person is sinful and under condemnation to eternal judgment.
(Gen. 2:16, Gen. 3:1, 7, Rom. 5:6, 11)
The Salvation of Sinners
We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace, and that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation.
(Eph. 2:8 & 9, John 3:16, John 5:24, John 3:36)
The Freeness of Salvation
We believe that the blessings of salvation are made free by the Gospel to all who repent of their sins and accept Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the Gospel.
(Rom. 3:24, Eph. 2:8-10, Titus 3:5)
The Security of the Believer
We believe that those who receive Jesus Christ as their Savior are eternally secure. Our security rests on the finished work of Jesus Christ. As a result, we have assurance.
(II Tim. 1:12, Rom. 8:35 & 39)
The Doctrine of the Church
We believe that the visible church is a congregation of baptized believers, practicing New Testament principles, believing its doctrine, observing it's ordinances, and exercising its autonomy.
(Matt. 16:18, Eph. 3:10 & 11, Cor. 3:11)
The Doctrine of Heaven and Hell
We believe in the eternal blessedness of the saved in heaven and the eternal punishment of the lost in Hell.
(I Thes. 4:13, John 14:1 &6, Matt. 25:31 & 46, Rev. 20:10 &15)

History
Baptist Medical & Dental Mission International was founded in 1974 by Charlie and Carolyn Herrington in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Prior to BMDMI's establishment, the Herringtons served in Honduras for six years working in evangelism and church development. The Lord richly blessed their early ministry efforts evidenced by the three churches planted during that time.
However, the Herringtons were constantly heart-broken as they saw people suffering from the lack of basic medical and dental care. On one occasion they discovered a woman passing through the last stages of cancer without even an aspirin to ease the pain. Countless other times, they met people with teeth rotted to the gum line. Instances such as these led them to ask the Lord what more they could do to help ease the pain and suffering that surrounded them.
The Lord gave them a vision of what today we know as "short-term mission teams" - Christian volunteers traveling to the mission field, paying their own expenses to serve the poor and sick. These teams draw thousands of people to hear the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and offer medical and dental services free of charge. The first team in 1974 consisted of seven volunteers; and every year since then, the number of teams and volunteers has grown.
In 1986 Charlie Herrington went home to be with the Lord. The Hondurans mourned the loss of a spiritual father and BMDMI mourned the loss of a dedicated, dynamic leader. However, BMDMI belongs to no person, but rather to the Lord, so the work continues.
In 1989, BMDMI expanded its ministry beyond the borders of Honduras to the neighboring country of Nicaragua offering medical-dental care, planting local churches, and preparing Christian leaders. Responding to growing needs in these two countries, BMDMI founded and operates Christian schools, permanent medical-dental clinics, vocational training centers, and children's homes. To oversee the work of these ministries, BMDMI took on the role of a missionary sending agency, accepting its first full time missionaries in 1992.
In 2010, World Baptist Missions (WBM) merged with BMDMI. Now under the auspices of BMDMI, the Baptist Hospital in Guaimaca, Honduras is growing in its ability to meet great needs through daily clinics and surgical programs made possible by volunteer North American surgeons. This merger has opened exciting new doors of ministry previously unavailable to BMDMI.
Since the Mission's foundation, the leaders of BMDMI promised the Lord that the physical care the Mission offered would never overshadow the spiritual care it seeks to provide; and the Lord has blessed the ministry in a great way for abiding by this promise.
